How to Brace on Cover and Concealment

Posted by Warrior Poet Society on Oct 31st 2024

John Lovell discusses how to manipulate weapons around obstacles during cover and concealment for tactical advantage.

There’s one simple factor we need to discuss when it comes to cover and concealment and working around barricades and obstacles. It’s how your gripping and bracing your rifle for maximum stability and mobility.

The C-clamp is critical. And I’m not talking about a new accessory to add to your kit. I’m talking about your thumb and finger forming a tight grip and forming a c-clamp toward the business end of your rifle for bracing against walls and barricades.

The beauty of the c-clamp is it guarantees that you're not way far out there waiting to get clipped by an incoming round as you work through a situation.

How to Use the C-Clamp Grip for Cover and Concealment

Get Free of Your Rifle Sling. Whenever I think I'm about to run and gun, my first step is to swim out of the sling.

Prep the Hand. A typical rifle grip is the under grip or clutching that forward grip. With the c-clamp, you’re initiating an over grip, in the form of a “C” so that the fat of your hand makes close contact with the barricade.

Take Position, Aim, Fire. Now that you’ve got your hand ready to act as a brace, you can decide whether to stand or kneel, aim, fire.

The Disadvantages of the C-Clamp

As much as I love the C-Clamp technique, there is a handful of drawbacks with this approach. Namely, the trouble with some of those bulkier accessories.

Of course this doesn’t negate the importance of or ability to perform the technique. It just makes it a little more challenging. But it’s still a valid approach when we’re talking about gaining that tactical advantage in close quarters.

Whatever approaches you’ve found for cover and concealment and other tactical practices, take some good classes. Have a qualified and experienced trainer on hand. Train Hard. Train Smart. Live Free. C-Clamp Mastery.
