The Mossberg Shockwave: Compact, Reliable, and Ready for Action

Posted by Warrior Poet Society on Jul 23rd 2024

If you’re looking for that classic 590 stopping power but contained in a tool small enough for your floorboard or backpack, the Mossberg Shockwave might be a worthy addition to your arsenal.

The Mossberg Shockwave is a compact beast. With a 14.3-inch barrel and an overall length of 26.5 inches, it's designed for maneuverability. It holds up to five plus one rounds and comes in 10- and 20-guage and .410. Don't let its size fool you. It packs a mean punch, but sometimes, with that recoil, you're the one getting punched–especially if you don't have the training and experience to handle the unusual balance.

The size, packability, and maneuverability, all packed in a Mossberg 590 style shotgun could make it worth the extra effort to sport this powerful little tool. And at least for now, its ATF designation allows for just about anyone to purchase it (at least federally. State laws differ on this.)

The Mossberg Shockwave Design and Ergonomics

I (John Lovell) picked mine up used from a local pawn shop for $400 to give it a try at the range and it made me feel a little like The Terminator firing from a Harley, though without the lever action magic–or the Harley.

This is a pump-action gun that I shot from eye level and hip level, and found the recoil management to be a bit of a chore. Though it was manageable and a lot of fun, especially with the forend strap. This is pretty much a necessity without the usual aid of a stock for stability. Using sights proved a little tricky at times.

But I loved the compacted design, which is what this gun was designed for. And it makes it especially adept for use in close quarters.

The Shockwave Pros: Compactness and Power

  • Compact Size: The Mossberg Shockwave can be easily stored in a backpack, vehicle, or bedside.
  • Versatility: It's compatible with various ammunition types, from slugs to birdshot and .410.
  • Stopping Power: It delivers a significant stopping power of other shotguns but without the bulk.

The Shockwave Cons: Recoil and Handling

  • Recoil: The heavy kickback is challenging, especially without a shoulder stock.
  • Handling: The free-floating design can affect stability and accuracy when moving.
  • Strap Issues: The forend strap can come loose, posing a safety risk.

The Mossberg Shockwave is a blast to shoot, pun intended. Its compact size makes it perfect for hip firing, which adds a whole new level of chutzpah to your range time. As with any new tool, it's important to train and drill and be ready to use the right way when it matters.
